Basket Supplies

If you are looking to make your own basket or compile your own gift basket there are many basket supplies that you will need.  Both options provide a great way to personalize your home and your gift! There are many ways to design a basket so that it fits your needs, or the needs of your loved one.  Before you begin you will need to have a basic idea of what you want your finished product to look like.  Purchasing supplies will be easier if you know what you are looking for!

Baskets can be made out of a variety of items; wicker, wire, and wood. You need to choose the type of basket you wish to make so that you can buy the proper supplies. All types of baskets can be make in different shapes and sizes so also keep that in mind when you are looking for basket supplies.   To start the basic shape or size for any type of basket you will need a base.  The base should reflect the basic shape and size you want your basket to be.

If you are making a wicker or woven basket you will need to attach side walls so you can weave an so your basket has support when it is complete.  The side walls need to be as long as you plan for your finished basket to be tall.  Once they are attached you can begin to weave your malleable material through the side walls in an over, under pattern.  You can continue this until you reach about an inch below the end of the walls.  Pulling your material tightly and packing the layers together will ensure that it is strong and durable when it is complete.  You can then attach the rim which should be the same shape as the base but significantly larger.  Once the rim is attached  you can continue weaving until you are out of room.   The basket supplies you will need for this type of basket can vary depending on the type of basket you wish to design.

If you are making a basket from wood there are two way you can do it.  For a basket of any size you can purchase multiple pieces of wood as your basket supplies.  You then need to attach side walls onto the four corners of your base (square baskets are easiest), you can do this by wood glue, or more sturdily nails.  You can then attach pieces of wood to the side walls for the sides of the basket.  You can place the planks of wood on top of each other for a complete basket look or leave spaces between the planks for a more decorative touch.  For a smaller wood basket you can carve your basket from one sole piece of wood.  This is quite time consuming but gives you the ability to truly craft a unique basket.  Wood can be painted or finished so that it doesn’t splinter and looks decorative.

Wire baskets can be made in a variety of ways.  Because wire tends to be strong and not easily bent, you will need to purchase wire cutters and shapers when you purchase your basket supplies.  Wire can be woven, much like wicker, over and under side walls.  It can also be welded to create a more modern look.  Some wire baskets require only bending of the wire and are formed of tightly wrapped wire.  Wire baskets are the least common hand crafted baskets because they can be difficult to make in the right shape and size.

Once you have your completed basket you can then use it for decoration or storage within your own home, or as the perfect basket for a gift basket.  When you are compiling a gift basket you will need to purchase more basket supplies to be placed within it.  You should establish a theme for your basket that you would like to follow.  The theme should reflect greatly upon your loved ones interests and hobbies.  You can then put together many items they will find useful within the basket.  Common themes include meals, where you provide a three course meal for two in the basket.  You can also personalize it to your loved ones hobby providing them with supplies or items they might need.   If you want to make it truly unique you can compile your loved ones favorite items; food, movies, hobbies, into one basket.
